Community Comes Together to Host Inclusive Prom for Adults with Cognitive Disabilities

BATAVIA, Ill.  — A coalition of local organizations, volunteers, and community partners is coming together to host a one-of-a-kind adaptive prom experience designed to celebrate adults with cognitive disabilities. Hollywood Prom: A Night to Remember will take place on March 21, 2026, offering an inclusive evening focused on dignity, joy, and belonging. The event takes place from 5 to 8 p.m. All participants must preregister at https://ourprom.org/.

Organized by a dedicated committee of more than 25 volunteers, the prom will feature dinner, dancing, music, and sensory-friendly activities in a welcoming and supportive environment. To ensure every participant feels confident and celebrated, a free prom attire giveaway and try-on day will be held on Saturday, March 7, with a selection of dresses and suits available at no cost.

The idea for the person-centered formal celebration was spearheaded by Hugo Saltijeral, Executive Director of Valley Sheltered Workshop in Batavia, who was inspired to create an experience many adults with disabilities never had the opportunity to enjoy.

“Too often, adults with disabilities are left out of milestone moments like prom,” said Saltijeral. “This night is about honoring them, celebrating who they are, and giving them the full red-carpet experience they deserve.”

The prom will be held at Batavia Moose Lodge #682, 1535 S. Batavia Ave., where lodge members have generously donated both the venue and dinner for attendees. Additional community organizations, nonprofits, and the City of Batavia are contributing decorations, photography, a DJ, a sensory booth, flowers, swag bags, and other special touches to make the evening unforgettable.

“This isn’t just a dance—it’s a statement about inclusion and community,” Saltijeral said. “We want our attendees to feel seen, valued, and celebrated from the moment they arrive until the last song plays.”
