House Resolution Recognizes July 11 as Unplug Illinois Day

BATAVIA, IL Batavia Park District Executive Director Allison Niemela was recognized for her role in co-creating a statewide recreation campaign at the June 16 meeting of the Batavia Park Board. Illinois State Representative Matt Hanson presented her with a copy of House Resolution 594, officially recognizing July 11 as Unplug Illinois Day.

Unplug Illinois originated as a strategic initiative of the Illinois Park and Recreation Association (IPRA) to raise awareness of the important role parks and recreation play in building healthy, connected communities. IPRA selected Niemela to lead the development of the statewide campaign. She assembled a committee of park and recreation professionals from across Illinois and, alongside a co-chair, helped create the Unplug Illinois brand and movement.

Since its launch in 2014, Unplug Illinois has encouraged residents across the state to step away from screens, spend time outdoors, connect with family and friends, and experience the many benefits of local parks, trails, programs and open spaces, Niemela said.

"Unplug Illinois was built on a simple idea, that some of life's best moments aren't found on a screen,” she said. “They're found around a campfire, on a trail, at a playground, at a community event, or simply spending time with the people who matter most. That's the spirit behind Unplug Illinois and the reason the campaign continues to resonate with people across the state."

Parks provide the perfect setting for those moments, she noted, “and it's rewarding to see a campaign that began as an idea grow into a statewide movement recognized by the Illinois General Assembly."

Niemela said Unplug Illinois Day serves as a reminder that recreation, nature and community connections are essential to overall well-being. "Whether it's taking a walk, attending a community event, exploring a trail or simply spending time outdoors with loved ones, every park visit is an opportunity to unplug, recharge and create lasting memories."
