Downtown Batavia Revives a Storied Tradition at 2026 Boo Boo Days

A throwback celebration with vintage ads, retro cocktails, and small-town charm during Windmill City Festival weekend, July 10-12.

Batavia, IL – This July, Downtown Batavia invites you to step back into a beloved tradition at the annual Boo Boo Days, part of the city's summer favorite: the Windmill City Festival weekend. Originating in 1956 as a modest sidewalk sale and officially dubbed "Boo Boo Days" until 1978, this long-standing event began when local merchants showcased clearance and overstock items on the sidewalks—a concept that quickly became a cherished summer staple.

This year's celebration brings the mid-century magic back to life with a stylish nod to the "Mad Men" era of sharp suits, swinging deals, and colorful storefronts. Downtown businesses will feature large-scale 1950s and '60s advertisements in their windows, offering visitors a chance to "window shop" vintage promotions like "Free Helicopter Rides for Kids!" and "Used Cars — ONLY $19!" These authentic ads, pulled from Batavia's early Boo Boo Days history, add a playful dose of nostalgia to the downtown experience.

Adding to the ambiance, downtown bars and restaurants are getting into the spirit with retro cocktail specials inspired by classic mid-century sips. Enjoy a Rosemary Fig Collins at Sturdy Shelter Brewing or a Singapore Sling at Sidecar Supper Club throughout the weekend.

Of course, Boo Boo Days wouldn't be complete without incredible bargains. Shoppers can score clearance e-bikes and accessories at Boj-E-Bikes, grab a classic hot dog for just $2.99 at Bulldogs Red Hots, or fill an entire large shopping bag at Paula's Couture Consignment for only $25. Rosewood Farm & Market will celebrate with a special Boo Boo Day cookie along with a discounted Mystery Pastry Box featuring an assortment of second-day bakery favorites. Thrown Threads will offer clearance pricing on select pottery and macramé pieces, while Zen Loft Collective will add a unique wellness experience to the weekend with Puppy Yoga on Friday, July 11. Visitors can also browse the Batavia Boardwalk Shops and explore additional sidewalk sales, end-of-season merchandise, and one-of-a-kind finds from downtown retailers throughout the weekend.

"Boo Boo Days represents Batavia's entrepreneurial spirit- local retailers coming together to offer unbeatable deals, delightful promotions, and a sense of community," said Kristen Desler, Assistant Director of Batavia MainStreet. "By reviving this promotion, we hope to spark nostalgia in longtime residents while introducing a new generation of shoppers to one of Batavia's most beloved traditions."
