Batavia is Named a Bronze-Level Bicycle Friendly Community
Batavia, Ill.) — The City of Batavia has been recognized as a Bronze-level Bicycle Friendly Community by the League of American Bicyclists, honoring the City’s ongoing efforts to create safer, more accessible conditions for people who bike.
Batavia is among more than 400 communities nationwide to earn the Bicycle Friendly Community designation, which recognizes local commitment to improving bicycling through planning, education, policies, programs, and infrastructure that serve residents of all ages and abilities.
“Building better places to bike is a shared effort,” said Bill Nesper, executive director of the League of American Bicyclists. “The communities recognized here are part of a growing national movement, taking practical steps to support bicycling as a safe, accessible, and valuable part of everyday life.”
The Bicycle Friendly Community program is part of the League of American Bicyclists’ Bicycle Friendly America initiative, which provides a national framework for evaluating and improving conditions for bicycling. Communities are assessed by factors such as infrastructure, education, encouragement programs, evaluation, and enforcement, with an emphasis on equity and accessibility.
“Batavia has a long-term commitment to earning certification as a Bike Friendly Community. The City’s Bike and Pedestrian Plan, along with the 2024–2028 Strategic Plan, guides ongoing efforts to create a comprehensive, connected network of streets and paths that supports safe and accessible walking and biking throughout Batavia,” said City of Batavia Administrator Laura Newman.
This round of awards includes 79 new and renewing communities, bringing the total number of current Bicycle Friendly Communities to 444 across all 50 states and the District of Columbia. More than 900 communities have applied for the designation, which also incorporates public input from local bicyclists and active transportation advocates as part of the evaluation process.
The Bicycle Friendly Community program includes five award levels—diamond, platinum, gold, silver, and bronze—along with an honorable mention category. Awarded communities must reapply every four years to demonstrate continued progress and alignment with evolving safety standards and best practices.
