This is a part-time position with Sunday morning responsibilities and flexible working hours for the remainder of the week (15-20 hour/week position).

Purpose:

The Director of Children’s Ministries will create a safe environment in which children can live and grow spiritually. The Director provides vision, creativity, and leadership in the development and direction of the church’s children’s programs (pre-K through 6th grade) that offer children’s knowledge and experience in Christian discipleship, worship, social justice, and fellowship.

Relationships:

This position reports directly to the pastor and is in relationship with the church council, church committees, congregants, and the community. The Director of Children’s Ministries works closely with the Director of Youth Ministries in caring for all children in the church and their families.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Experience in children’s ministry or a related educational role, special needs experience preferred
  • Commitment to the vision of the Congregational Church of Batavia
  • Strong leadership and organizational skills
  • Ability to relate well to children and their families
  • Knowledge of child development and age-appropriate teaching strategies
  • Creative and innovative approach to program development
  • Flexibility and adaptability in a dynamic environment
  • Strong ethical standards and ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Complete a background check and provide 3 references of past experience in children’s ministry or education

Responsibilities:

The responsibilities of the Director of Children’s Ministries include:

Leading and supporting the overall vision and coordination of faith formation for children in a safe, joyful environment

Developing, implementing, enhancing, and evaluating all of the children’s programs and curricula at the Congregational Church of Batavia (including, but not limited to, Sunday School, midweek programming, summer activities, and Vacation Bible School), working closely with the pastor, other church staff, and various church volunteers

Praying for the children and families at the Congregational Church of Batavia and our community at-large

Providing care for the whole child with attentiveness to their physical, emotional, spiritual, mental, and socio-economic needs to promote their flourishing

Coordinating with the church’s overall volunteer efforts in recruiting, training, ensuring background checks are processed, completing safety training, and supervising volunteers who assist with children’s programs

Publicizing children’s programming and activities to the congregation in the Tower, the bulletin, and on the church’s social media platforms

Exploring ways to maintain up-to-date educational practices and strategies and creatively using technology to provide an inviting environment for spiritual growth

Supporting the nursery staff and checking in regularly to assess needs

Helping children and their families be in good relationship with each other by offering resources, pastoral care, and workshops

Participating in required professional development

Collaborating with church staff (council leadership and ministry teams) to integrate children’s ministry into the broader church mission

Ensuring that plans and people are in place to respond adequately to emergencies, and that children’s activities comply with the existing safe church and building use policies

Attending weekly staff meetings

Communicating regularly with church council

Overseeing the children’s ministry budget and organizing supplies and equipment
