Pondering Paper-2,000 Years Young
Description
Author and cultural historian Nicholas A. Basbanes will examine the history of paper and how it revolutionized civilization. Basbanes will share interesting stories about paper, such as the National Security Agency’s secret documents being pulped by cryptologists and recycled into pizza boxes, and the paper mill that has been the exclusive supplier of paper for American currency since 1879.
Basbanes is well known for writing books about books and book culture. His latest book, On Paper: The Everything of Its Two-Thousand-Year History, was a finalist for the Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Nonfiction for 2014.
In addition to his books, Basbanes has written for numerous newspapers, magazines, and journals, including The New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Washington Post, Boston Globe, Smithsonian, Humanities, Civilization, and New England Quarterly. Basbanes lectures widely on a variety of cultural subjects.
The program is sponsored by the Batavia Public Library Foundation (2014–2015 Season Sponsor) and is co-sponsored by the Kane Country Chronicle.
