Last year 50 million people participated. This Saturday March 28 from 8:30-9:30 pm an estimated 1 billion people around the globe are expected to participate in Earth Hour 2009.
Come celebrate this Global Event locally in Batavia at Batavia Riverwalk, just west of City Hall. Rain, clear or cloudy skies, the hour promises to be packed with fun, free, family-friendly activities. With three main events, certainly they’ll be something for everyone.
- The Fox Valley Astronomical Society (www.fvastro.org) will be out sharing both their telescopes and their knowledge. Bring your own telescopeand receive “tips from the pros”.
- Master storyteller, Marianne Fieber, from Four Winds Waldorf School in Warrenville (www.fourwindswaldorf.org) will enchant the crowd with star and earth-friendlystories for listeners of any age.
- Music will be provided by all who are willing. Jeffrey Matter of Batavia’s “Music Matters School of Music” (musicmattersschool.com) will be leading a “drum circle”. He will provide 50 drums, but feel free to bring your own. In case of inclement weather, the event will move inside to (a darkened) Batavia City Hall Council Chamber.
- To finish off the evening nearby ice-cream parlor, ”Batavia Creamery” will extend their hours to 10 PM offering specially discounted cones to all Earth Hour participants.
The city of Batavia is an official participant of Earth Hour 2009 (sponsored by World Wild Life Fund) and will turn off all non-essential lights. If you’ll be out of town or will be otherwise unable to participate in Batavia’s Riverwalk event, join in where ever you are! Vote for the Earth by turning off your lights.
